Max Goes North

El Questro to Kalumburu

Gibb River Road

With trepidation we encounter the start of the Gibb River Road near Kununurra.

More creeks!

Another photo by Max, lucky these creeks were not very deep. This crossing is on the way in to El Questro

Flying High II

So we get to El Questro and they have bargain helicopter flights on offer...... Fabulous flight including a gentle slalom down Salmond Gorge at about 120k/hr (which is slow in flying terms)

More swimming

Katrina & Max in the natural pool adjacent to the campground at El Questro

El Questro Gorge

Here we are on our way in to El Questro Gorge where there was another nice swimming hole awaiting us....

Monitor Max

Max bravely defying the Merten's Water Monitor skulking on the rocks. (OK, skulking may be a bit harsh.....)

You want rocks?

Explosion Gorge was a nice drive but there were a few rocks at the end

Lookout!

On the way to Pigeon Hole; ergo the Pigeon Hole Lookout on El Questro Station

Bashers

On leaving El Questro we encountered the Variety Club Bash cars coming the other way at a great rate of knots

Greg calls home

This is the phone booth at Drysdale River Station. There were very firm instructions NOT to use 10 cent pieces which would jam the phone and it would take Telstra 3 weeks to fix it......

Corruga-a-a-ations

They weren't as bad as we were led to believe but this was a 15k/hr stretch for about 3 kilometres.

Another day, another chopper flight

This was our third helicopter flight in a week, this time to Mitchell Falls (we walked out). Leon the pilot gave Max a treat with a couple of tight turns before landing.....

Mitchell Falls

Note the sensible clothing and shoes, and the nice waterfall of course. We swam in the pools at the top.

More swimming

At the top of Mitchell Falls

King Edward River

And another swimming hole equipped campground. A very popular spot on the way to Mitchell Falls or Kalumburu (or both)

Green Tree Frog

We were attacked by a freddo of frogs early one morning and Max managed to catch one (carefully, and with moist hands) at King Edward River

Hurley Burleys

We met Annabelle & Stephen & Philippa & David & George (from Sidenny) at King Edward River, then at Bell Gorge, then Windjana Gorge and then Broome. And here we were thinking we were the only one's doing this!

Didgeridoo

We bought Max a didgeridoo from Kalumburu, this is the lady who made it and painted it (Rosslyn Karadada) and her daughter Jade with Max

Didg Tips

And then Rosslyn's uncle Lewis gave Max a few tips on how to play; ie practice, practice. Lewis sounds a lot like Mr Vladkoff....

Catching the bait first

This is Darryl from the Pilbara demonstrating how to catch bait fish with a cast net at Kalumburu. Darryl kindly took Max & I fishing a couple of times not knowing that Greg & fishing does not compute. He knows now....

Sunset at Kalumburu

This is one of the reasons people go there

I caught one!

A minor miracle of course. Max was a bit dark because he simply fed the fish with nice fresh white bait all day! This is apparantley a nanagai....

Artistic types

Our new friend from Kalumburu, Julie, painting a picture for us while Max is practicing on his new didgeridoo

She's gunna kill me!!

Katrina swimming at Kalumburu where you only swim for 10 seconds in the morning while the water is clear........! I was the lookout so everything was under control

Ford Blitz?

I think this is a WWII Ford Blitz parked at Kalumburu, no doubt my dad will correct me at some point (it could be an Inter apparently)

And if you would like a local's perspective of Kalumburu,
