Greg Gives
Symantec a Belting Over LiveUpdate
OK, so I
couldn't help myself! I have been bothered by the (in)effectiveness
of Norton LiveUpdate which is a feature of Norton AntiVirus
software and has been for sometime. Trouble is, LiveUpdate
actually only updates itself weekly, which is appalling because
the last four major virus/worm outbreaks spread around the world
within a day or two. Read my
Letter to the Editor
of Australian Reseller News which I wrote the day after the
Novarg/MyDoom virus was discovered. |

Free Internet Protection from Internode
One of the things we
like about Internode's internet service is that they are
pro-active. Internode has just introduced a free service
which includes Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam filtering at their end; ie
junk mail and viruses are filtered by Internode before they
get to your computer. So, if you are an existing Internode
customer, this service is already working for you; if you would
like to connect to Internode please
email us or check out the
Internode web site |

Fake
Anti-Spam Tool
Crikey, this is a
veritable litany of trickery! This email message arrived in
my inbox purporting to rid my computer of spam, however some
skeptical research uncovered the fact that SpamRemedy is actually
spam itself and will only increase the level of junk email coming
into your computer! The trick to spotting this stuff is to
first look at the senders email address which will usually be
false. As always, don't open attachements unless you are
certain as to what they contain and delete unsolicited emails no
matter how authentic they look. |

Fake Microsoft Security Bulletins
Well, the
Swen virus has shaken the computer world up a bit; you may
receive an email which pretends to be from Microsoft offering you
a Windows security update but which instead has an attachment
containing a virus. More than ever before you need to be
very skeptical about opening email attachments, even if they
appear to be from well known companies. As always, we
recommend you keep your antivirus software right up to date, all
the time. |

Blaster Worm
(Virus) hits the world for six
If there was ever a
good reason to keep your Windows and AntiVirus software up to
date, this is it. The Blaster Worm was discovered in the
world on August 11 and took advantage of a flaw in the Windows XP
(and 2000) operating system for which an update (patch) was
released on July 16. We have found that those most affected
by the worm tended to choose "later" when offered Windows updates
by their computer. Windows 98 computers are unaffected by
the Blaster Worm. For the full story browse to
Symantec |

THIS is a hard disk!
Western Digital has
released their biggest IDE hard disk drive yet with a capacity of 250
gigabytes. That's two hundred and fifty thousand megabytes,

fifty billion bytes (as rightly pointed out by Shane!). You could write a
book with 125 million pages of text and still have room for a few thousand
photos or music files..... Check out the full range of

7 - Do you really need to be on an
email
directory listing?
Well, if it was free
perhaps you would although one would hardly wish to encourage
email marketers! If it was to cost you $100 or more per year
we would suggest you should get in touch with your local web page
designer and invest in your own web page which would be far more
likely to promote the activities of your business. The link
above will show you the email we received (not in 1601 though!)
which looks very formal but we suggest you investigate thoroughly
before committing funds.. |

March 13 - Longer
battery life for
Toshiba notebook computers
Check out the new
Centrino notebook models which offer extended battery life through
the use of a new technology called Centrino which also features
integrated wireless networking capability. The interesting
thing about these new models is that the Centrino processors run
at lower clock speeds (as in gigahertz) yet deliver higher
performance. For example the Centrino 1.6 processor
outperforms the Pentium 4 2.4 model, so it is now harder than ever
to compare computer models based on the processor speed.

Recall of Fujitsu MPG series hard disk
drives
Fujitsu has been too pathetic to recall their faulty MPG hard
disk drives which were sold around the world in 2000 & 2001, so we
are doing it ourselves. If our records indicate that your
computer is fitted with one of these drives, you will be contacted
shortly and given the option to have the hard drive replaced.
You will also be gently reminded that backups are essential in the
event of a hard disk drive failure, which in the case of an MPG
series Fujitsu hard disk drives usually means complete loss of
data.
Email Greg if you have any concerns about the integrity
and security of your data.
Here is a link to just one of many forums which show how
widespread the problem is |
