A word from Greg about.....
Data Backup Options |
|
The page is designed to
give you an overview of the backup devices available to you to
protect your valuable data. If a computer system fails, data
is lost; and the extent to which this creates a problem is largely
dependent on the quality of your data backups. It doesn't
matter how you do it, as long as you do it on a regular basis.
The more copies of your data you have stored in different locations,
the more comfortable you will be that your valuable data files are
protected.

USB Flash Drive |
2gb - 32gb |
A 2 gigabyte USB flash drive is
ideal for accounting data backup, you might need 4 or 8 gigabytes
for mixed data files including photos and music. If you have a
lot of photos or music files to backup you may find an external USB
hard disk drive to be better value for money. USB flash drives
have no moving parts and are therefore inherently reliable, however
electronic failure can occur at any time so multiple copies are
recommended. |
 |
External USB Hard Disk Drive |
250gb - 2tb |
External USB hard disk drives offere
great value for money and you have a choice of pocket-sized USB
powered drives or the larger AC powered drives which will give you
more storage for your dollar. Both types of back device are
based on the same hard disk drives you find in laptop and desktpp
computers. With an appropriate size drive you can backup all
of your data in one step which makes this type of backup device the
most convenient to use. |
 |
DVD |
4.7gb - 8.5gb |
DVDs (and CDs) are clumsier and more
time consuming to use however they provide an economical method of
archiving data which can easily be stored off-site. Most
people will fit (say) a years photos on a DVD so it it is still a
worthwhile backup method. |
 |
CD |
700mb |
CD capacity is just too small for
anything other than minimal data backup, use a DVD instead |
 |
Blu-Ray |
23gb - 50gb |
Blu-Ray drives are not yet commonplace however they will replace DVD
drives within a couple of years. |
