If you are in
business, the short answer is yes!
Your own domain name is
the starting point for a sensible email address which is not locked
in to your internet service provider. If you decide to change
internet providers, or your internet provider goes out of business,
or is taken over by another provider, then chances are you will lose
your email address. You may be able to have it redirected to
your new address for a period of time, but you will eventually have
to change it. If you have your email address printed on your
stationery, you will clearly have a short term problem.
If you have your own
domain name, and email addresses at that domain, you can change your
internet provider as often as you like without affecting your email
address. You will need to make small changes each time to the
settings in your email software, but your contacts will never notice
the difference.
If you plan to have a
web page to promote the activities of your business, you could take
advantage of the free web space offered by your internet provider,
but you would then have a web address which was locked in to your
provider. Contrast www.adelaide.net.au/~lcc
with www.lcc.com.au
and it is easy to see which is preferable for business. For
personal web pages, the address is not usually important.
