This page is mainly for new computer users, or perhaps you have just purchased a new scanner, CD burner or digital camera and are not sure how to get started.  The manufacturer's web site is always a good starting point for technical information, but these "how to" guides will help you get the most out of your computer.

Outlook 2002:  Backup Your Master Categories List
This is one of those things you don't think of when backing up your data, however if you use Microsoft Outlook and have your Contacts grouped by category, you may wish to backup or transfer your Master Categories list to save typing them all in again.  Browse to Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB297405
No Disconnect Prompt When Quitting Internet Explorer
A recent phenomenon with the Windows operating system has seen Internet Explorer (or Outlook Express) prompt you to disconnect the internet when you close the browser window.  So you pay attention to the two little blinking computers in the System Tray at the bottom right corner of your screen and click on them to bring up the disconnect option.  If you are feeling brave (note the disclaimer on the Microsoft support web page) you can click the above link and fix the problem.
Viewing Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations
From time to time you may be sent a PowerPoint presentation via email; in fact many amusing emails are created with PowerPoint.  Not many computers have PowerPoint installed, and it is relatively expensive to purchase by itself (it is better value to buy it as part of the Microsoft Office suite).  The good news is you can download the PowerPoint Viewer software from Microsoft so you can at least read PPS files.  if you wish to create your own PowerPoint presentations, you will need to purchase the full version of course.

A word from Greg ...

If you book your computer in for attention by our service department, you will notice that we ask you the status of your Windows and Anti-Virus updates before we commence the job.  This is because of the prevalence of computer viruses which cause problems with computers, and because many problems are solved simply by keeping your operating system up to date.  The good news is that you can do these things yourself as a matter of course, or you can engage us to do them for you if you prefer.  Either way, you will have a more enjoyable computing experience.
